Last Friday, Lovejoy Baptist Church was officially recognized as a Rome landmark.

The well-known South Rome institution has a 110-year history, according to Rome City Commissioner Jamie Doss, who chairs the city’s landmarking committee.

“They have a wonderful little brick structure next to the church that displays the landmarking plaque,” he said. “The event was facilitated by I think a very well-known Roman, Ester Vaughn. She did a great job putting that program together, and Rev. Carey Ingram also did a great job with prayer and a positive message.”

The next site to be landmarked will be the Rebecca Blaylock Nursery in West Rome.

The nursery, named for former teacher and nursery founder Rebecca Blaylock, has had two homes during its 90-year history but has been housed at the former Graham Street School Building for many years.

The facility was an African American School before the integration of the Rome School System.
