Newly elected Floyd County Commissioner David Thornton is ready to get to work.

Thornton defeated Chip Hood in the runoff for the Post 4 seat on the commission.

The election was certified by the Floyd County Board of Elections on Friday and Thornton will be attending training this week.

During an interview with Doug Walker on WRGA’s First News, Thornton told us why he decided to run for office.

“It’s all about people,” he said. “I went to my wife and talked to her, and I said I was interested in doing this. We discussed it with the whole family, we prayed about it, and I felt led to do it.

Thornton mentioned some of the issues that he is focused on.

“Law enforcement and public safety is near and dear to my heart,” he said. “Looking at the tax burden and seeing what we can do to help people in the community. There is economic development. There are many things to do, so I am anxious to serve and want to help in any way I can.”

Thornton, who has been a full-time chaplain with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office since 2018, said that he will still serve in that capacity as a volunteer.
