Rome City Commissioners are expected to vote on a new spay, neuter, and chip ordinance when they meet Monday night.
As written, the ordinance would require cats over 4 months old and dogs over 6 months old to be spayed or neutered and microchipped.
“The ordinance before you is coming from the public safety committee, and they have recommended adoption,” Rome City Clerk Joe Smith told the commission during a first reading of the ordinance last month. “This is similar, or maybe the exact wording of the document that the county has adopted.”
There are exceptions for breeders and working animals like hunting dogs, or if the animal has a health condition that would prevent it from safely being altered.
In other action, the commission will consider a contract for semi-annual groundwater monitoring services for the Berry Hill and Walker Mountain Landfill facilities.
Groundwater and surface water monitoring are performed in accordance with Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division Rules for Solid Waste Management.
The commission meeting begins at 6:30 pm at Rome City Hall.
The caucus will begin an hour early at 4 pm so commissioners can tour the NOVA River District.
The 250-residence, mixed-use development in on West Third Street in Downtown Rome, is expected to open for resident move-ins by July.
