Plans are moving forward to purchase property on Riverside Parkway for a new Rome City Police Department headquarters.
On Friday, the city commission voted to authorize the City of Rome to execute an option to purchase the 2.6-acre site, located at the corner of Riverside Parkway and Riverside Industrial Park.
The purchase price is 2.1 million.
The city will submit $50,000 in earnest money and will have a 45-day due diligence period prior to closing.
The 2023 special purpose, local option sales referendum approved by voters included more than $22 million for the construction of a new city police headquarters.
The move was made necessary by the negotiations over the allocation of local sales tax revenues. As part of the agreement, both the city and county police agreed to vacate the joint law enforcement center, which will be renovated for additional courtroom space.
The Rome Police Department is now temporarily headquartered in the former Scott Logistic building off of Technology Parkway.
The Floyd County Police Department is currently renovating the former Glenwood Primary School off of Old Dalton Road, which will become the new county HQ.
