Warnings were issued starting Monday for the new speed enforcement cameras in the West Central School Zone on Lavender Drive.

The City of Rome is partnering with RedSpeed to enhance school zone safety in that area.

This is the third school zone in the city to install speed enforcement cameras.

According to Rome Police, since the introduction of cameras at Main Elementary on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Rome High on Veterans Memorial Highway, there has been 97% decrease in speeding violations compared to initial traffic studies.

The new cameras at West Central Elementary will be operational during school hours, from one hour before the school day begins until one hour after dismissal.

The cameras will issue citations to drivers exceeding the posted speed limit by over 10 miles per hour.

No fines will be issued during the 30-day warning period.

After that, violators will face a civil fine of $75 for the first violation and $125 for subsequent violations. Importantly, these fines do not result in points on a driver’s record or affect insurance premiums.
