This summer, cyclists will ride across the State of Georgia, with the event beginning right here in Rome.

Big BRAG, or the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, is a week-long event with cyclists averaging about 55 miles per day.

It begins in Rome on May 31 with an overnight stay at the Forum River Center.

Chris Fincher with Floyd County Emergency Management attended a recent planning meeting for the event, and he said event organizers are expecting a fairly large group.

“There is going to be a big sendoff,” he said. “They’ve got a large archway that they are going to take off from, and that night before they are going to have a lot of things in town to kind of welcome the riders to Rome. BRAG brings with it a large contingent of really knowledgeable planners. They’ve done this before,e and they know what to prepare for with shower trailers and things like that. BRAG has turned into a really big thing.”

From Rome, the ride goes to Cartersville, Jasper, Dawsonville, Clarkesville, and Toccoa before wrapping up on June 7 in Hartwell.
