Another big tennis tournament gets underway this week at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College.
The Georgia Open wheelchair tennis tournament starts on Wednesday, according to Sarah Williams with the Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism.
“It is a professional wheelchair tournament with 50 athletes this year from 15 counties,” she said.
The tournament will run until Sunday.
“We are still looking for volunteers to come help with the tournament,” Williams said. “If anybody is interested in coming out and helping us fill coolers, take bananas down to the courts, keep an eye on things, and watch some great tennis, we would love to have some help. Come by the visitors center or give us a call at (706) 295-5576, and we will be glad to put you down as a volunteer.”
The Rome Tennis Center at Berry College opened in 2016 and features 57-courts on a 30 acre site. The site is comprised of USTA standard, asphalt tennis courts, 6 NCAA regulation courts, 6 indoor courts and 3 center courts for tournament and collegiate play.
The terraced design provides ADA accessibility to all courts and has wider entryways to accommodate sport chairs for wheelchair tennis.
