Man charged with vehicular homicide in crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian

A Silver Creek man has been charged with a felony count of 1st-degree vehicular homicide in the death of a pedestrian on Highway 53 at Dempsey Road on February 20.

According to an arrest warrant and Floyd County Jail records:

36-year old Joshua Cleveland Harker was using his cell phone to send a text message as he approached a broken-down vehicle on the right shoulder of the highway.

Harker’s 2014 Honda Accord struck the rear of the vehicle on the shoulder and then hit two pedestrians who were outside the vehicle.

Both pedestrians were severely injured, with 31-year old Skyler Redden of Rome later dying from his injuries.

In addition to homicide by vehicle, Harker is also charged with reckless driving and distracted driving.
